Upper Lip Electrolysis on Dark Skin. Real Client Case

2 min read

One of the concerns we often hear from clients with darker skin is whether electrolysis can cause scarring or unwanted pigmentation, especially on a sensitive area like the upper lip.

This case follows the real treatment progress of one of our clients at TS Electrolysis in Vancouver, WA.

What Her Progress Looked Like

Rather than judging the treatment by how the skin looks immediately after one appointment, we documented the area over time.

As treatment continued, the visible amount of hair decreased while the skin maintained its normal appearance between sessions.

This is one reason we like documenting real cases. Electrolysis is a process. Hair follicles are treated as hairs become available during their different growth cycles, so progress is best evaluated over a series of appointments rather than after a single treatment.

What About Hyperpigmentation or Scarring?

Temporary redness, swelling, small bumps, or temporary changes in pigmentation can happen after electrolysis, especially in skin that is prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These temporary healing responses are not the same as permanent skin damage or scarring.

In this client’s case, the progress photos document both the skin and the hair over time. As more follicles were permanently treated, the upper lip became progressively more hair-free while the skin returned to its normal appearance between sessions. No scarring is present in the documented progress photos.

Proper technique and aftercare are especially important when treating sensitive areas such as the upper lip and skin that is prone to pigmentation changes.

Electrolysis vs. Laser for Darker Skin

Laser and electrolysis work in very different ways.

Laser relies on pigment in the hair to absorb light energy. Because of this, results depend on factors such as hair color, skin tone, and the type of laser being used.

Electrolysis does not rely on pigment. Each individual hair follicle is treated directly, which means electrolysis can permanently remove unwanted hair on all skin tones and all hair colors, including blonde, red, grey, and white hair.

The goal is not temporary hair reduction. Electrolysis permanently treats the follicles responsible for unwanted hair. As successive growth cycles are treated, the area becomes more and more hair-free until the remaining unwanted hairs are eliminated.
